Episode #14: We're not Worthy! (part 2 of 2)

Episode #14: We're not Worthy! (part 2 of 2)

This is the second part of the episode. Sorry it took me so long to get this out, spinning has taken over my life. We are with the Wollmeise again and she reveals some interesting details about her life. Don't want to give anything away, you just gotta listen. Ok, one teaser - did she say something about a sock club???

Also, we reveal the contest answers and who the winner is!

Episode #14: We're Not Worthy - Part 1 (Show Notes)

This is a very special 2-part episode!!! It's a very long one and poor Ms. B has to edit it. The session went for about 3 hours and so she decided that we need to break this up into two parts.

So why aren't we worthy? That's because the Goddess of yarn, the Wollmeise has graced upon us with her presence in this episode! It's a long one, so let's get started!!!

Welcome and introduction done by the Wollmeise herself in German: "Herzlich Wilkommen und herzliches Grüßgott aus München von der Wollmeise. Ich darf heute hier mit bei der 14. Ausgabe von Podcast, Knitters Uncensored, mit machen!"

Yes, finally we got the Wollmeise to come on the podcast. It was quite a task getting her on the podcast. She was so nervous that both Ms. B and Cashyie had to hold her hands. Wollmeise took some times off her extremely busy schedule to come over and podcast with us. And her English is great, don't you think?

Package from Charles was finally brought out. And the Wollmeise ended sharing the stitch markers from him with Ms. B and Cashyie! ;-)

What's on/off the needles?
  • Elemm:
    • Mystic Light KAL Shawl that turned into Juno Regina, which the Wollmeise suddenly claimed for herself...I was taken by surprise...but hey, what can I do apart from just bow to her wishes?
Juno Regina [70:366, 05.04.2008]
    • Raku-Clapotis (FO):
Raku-Clapotis
    • Opal Socks (FO):
Opal Socks [77:366, 14.04.2008]
    • Icarus Shawl (FO) for my mum's birthday:
Icarus Shawl

We veered off a bit here and it seems that Cashyie might be pulled into lace knitting soon. :-p
Promptyly Cashyie took on the tangent about hiding mittens in the hat and leave the whole package in the mailbox, so that she doesn't have to wear it to school. When she comes home, she could just take the whole package out of the mailbox again and pretended that she had been wearing it. :-p Wollmeise was perplexed by this and told us a better way: Just leave them on the tree and lose them! She then reminisced about how her mum told her to always wear her hats out and not to go out with freshly washed and damp hair. But well, who likes hat-hair?

Ms. B started discussing about the fact that Germans tend to "pack up" themselves, or especially their kids in really warm clothings, so that no skins would be exposed to the coldness.

Wollmeise reckons that German mums put on too much clothes on their kids and they end up losing them. Her own kids generally come back home with only one shoe because they play boat with one of their shoe. :-p
We also found out that the Wollmeise knits with her own yarns, too...but only with skeins that have knots in them. She also has SSS (Second Sock Syndrome)! We also talked about the socks that she was wearing, which were knit out of her own hand-spun (you can see the picture above)...they're her lucky-socks.

Cashyie ended up comparing Wollmeise to Prinzregententorte. We also found out that Wollmeise's younger son did an apprenticeship as a Pâtisserie Master at a place that sells their stuff to Dallmayr. Wollmeise then thought of Bienenstich (Wiki entry in German)..hmmmm...yummy!

Wollmeise then shared her family life with us and talked about her kids. We found out why she doesn't knit for her kids, but at the same time throwing away her husbands white socks and giving him only hand-knit socks instead. ;-)
  • Cashyie is still on sock-knitting mode and she's knitting up another pair of Hobbledehoy socks! She showed us another pair of socks that she was wearing...and Wollmeise noticed that Cashyie haven't even weaved in the ends yet!
We then talked about knitting on the plane. And Cashyie showed us some yarns that she got from her trip to New Orleans.

A report from me about the Handarbeits- und Hobbymesse in Cologne that I got to go to the week before with my boss from Lanaiolo. I got some Lanternmoon Rosewood DPNs to try and my review of it is that I really like them! It was the first time for me to knit with wooden needles and to my surprise, they're pretty sturdy and they feel nice in your hands. Thank you very much to Jo from Lanternmoon!

I saw my friend, Daniela from Maschenkunst. I also went to see Kelley Petkun from the Knit Pick's Podcast.

I also got to meet Miriam Tegels, the person who holds the current record in Guiness Book World of Record as the fastest knitter in the world! So, I took the chance and did a small interview with her! (CORRECTION: I said that Miriam knit English style, but now that I go and have a look at the videos again, she actually knits continental.)

Sauerlach Market, 18th-20th April, and the Wollmeise is there with her yarns! She has hardly anymore yarn though....and she still needs to get used to her new dyeing-station.

Spinning!!! I enabled Ms. B into wanting to spin her own hand-spun. And so, she got a Louet S15 lent out from the Wollmeise...plus, Ms. B has already managed to build up a fibre stash. We talked about what's special about hand-spun and got to hear the Wollmeise's take on it.

That's the end of Part 1. Keep a look out for part 2, it's coming soon!

Episode #14: We're not Worthy! (part 1 of 2)

This session was soooooo long that I had to break it up into two parts. We have a special guest today - the Wollmeise! She was kind enough to take a break from her busy schedule to sit with us and chat. We also have a short interview with Miriam Tegels - the world record holder for fastest knitter! wowowowowow!

Episode #07: Fun Filled With Fibre Factoids! (Show Notes)

Another long episode.....but we know you LOVE it! ;-p

Cashyie officially tried to eliminate me from the show by feeding me high percentage alcohol. Believe me, this Stroh 80 thing BURNS your throat....and I couldn't talk for a bit. And promptly, we veered off to talk about Tyrolean Mankitten....

You will learn the use of made-up words by Tyrolean Mankitten. You get to learn what chillaxin' is....and why it shouldn't be transcribed directly in Catalán: Xlaxin' just got Ms. B and me laughing literally for minutes! (If you don't know, Exlax is a brand of laxative! - And no, this isn't advertisement).

Now that you know, take the poll:

  • Cashyie:
    • Montego Bay Scarf
    • She's going to cast on for mittens
Cashyie also tells us about her experience knitting at the gym, falling down the elliptical trainer and other anecdotes you can only find at the gym.

I had been neglecting my knitting totally...because I found a new hobby: Spinning! I actually started off with Ms. B. Scored off some rovings from her (which she actually got from Cauchy09). Ms. B doesn't like spinning. I, on the other hand, am totally hooked. I got some cheap wool to spin with and I also got heaps of rovings and fibre samples from Mike and KnottyNaomi!

I finished spinning up the singles during recording. Got home that evening and plied the yarn, washed and set the twist...and here's the result:

Hand-spun: Midnight Lilac, originally uploaded by elemmaciltur.

I also talked about this one sample from KnottyNaomi, which is Ingeo.

Cashyie has been conducting some secret experiments! She dyed some gorgeous yarn! First, she scored the blank yarn - not even super-wash - from Ms. B. Interestingly, Cashyie dyed the yarn with hair-dye. She even talked to us a bit about the scientific side of dyeing the yarn with hair-dye.

German terms with Elemm: I've decided to do something different. But before I could even start, we got another not-so-very-appropriate German term for you, and that is "Arschgeweih" ("Ass Antler").

Anyway, I will be translating the colourway names of the Wollmeise yarns! I won't be translating the obvious ones, but I'll include them here for the sake of completeness:
  • Wollmeise = Wool tomtit
  • Sonne = sun
  • Campari Orange (it's a cocktail, HERE is the recipe)
  • Kürbis = pumpkin
  • Spice Market
  • Red Hot Chili
  • Uluru (click on the link, if you don't know what "Uluru" is)
  • Indisch Rot = Indian red
  • Dornröschen = Sleeping Beauty (lit. thorny rose)
  • Wilder Mohn = Wild poppy
Life in Germany with Ms. B: Working and vacation in Germany. Bavaria has the most amount of vacations and holidays in Germany....and that's why Ms. B and her family chose to be here. *LOL* Cashyie also shares her German work cafeteria (Mensa) life.

Also, when you move here, you need to register yourself at the citizen registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt). When you register, you need to put in your religion....and you end up with a religion tax.

Holidays aren't compensated here, if that holiday falls on a weekend.

CV in your application for a job here needs to have a photo of yourself in it. There are some discrimination at work place here that aren't spoken for openly...but it's there and believe me, I have experienced it myself. They're not rampant about it, but it's an underlying tone. Especially they would discriminate because of age. Also, it's hard for women who have children here to work, just because of the time slot of things here.

And again, we picked on Rock Star Husband. We tested him against Cashyie on their knowledge of all things about knitting. And poor Rock Stark Husband got tricked into drinking a shot of Stroh 80 before doing the quiz. (And I noticed that he was wearing cashmere socks!) Cashyie totally scored this round. ;-)

Rock Star Husband tells a story about a creepy little girl who scared him in his younger years. We'll be hearing more of his stories in later episodes!

Ms. B also talks about her Malabrigo yarns that she got....partly for the Hanami Stole that Shannon from the SSK Podcast enabled her to knit.

Announcements:
  • Benediktbeuern Textile Market (22nd-23rd September 2007): We're set! For those in Germany, it seems we're all meeting up at the Hauptbahnhof to take the train together. Since you're all coming at different time, I'm suggesting that we gather our group at the Starbucks on the platforms to the southern side of the station. I'll be there from 8.30 a.m. onwards on Saturday morning (22nd). I think that we'll be taking the train that leaves at 10.32 a.m. and we should arrive in Benediktbeuern at 11.29 a.m. We will organise the returning time when we got together, since some of us might want to get back early. Really looking forward to meeting up with everybody! Anyone who just wants to join us for the day is welcome, but please let me know with ample time so that I can organise you into the group!
  • Ms. B's first round of Taste of Germany went extremely well. It sold out within 3 seconds, srsly! But don't be afraid, second round will be coming up soon, and it probably will be green!
Bonus! Cashyie reads an entry of her blog (not available to the public ;-p )! She tells us about our photo shoot for a German management magazine. She also tells us about the imaginary lives of the Munich statues.

We then talk about this particular photo shoot that Cashyie just talked about. How we were supposed to pose, but not look posed. Where we were shooting...how the photo supposed to turn out (in "sunshine", while we were, in reality, freezing our asses off in drizzling rain). We're not allowed to post the photo yet though...but rest assure, it will come! ;-)

Episode #06: Jaeger...Spun Out of Control (Show Notes)

We're getting better at putting out loooooooooooooooonng episodes. :-p

I was caught off-guard introducing myself. Anyway, I missed out on CSD, i.e. the Gay Pride, just to record for you guys! Cashyie wants me to do a wet T-Shirt contest, just because it was raining...but I've got a cold. Then I started talking about this edible knit-underwear, but opted for Jaegermeister instead, a "H"erbal liqueur.

Thank you to ScoutJ for dyeing up a special colourway for the Knitters Uncensored: "South Tyrolean Mankitten in Lederhosen"! And Ms. B talks about cost limit at custom and the strategy to get off it....we digressed and started talking about the Euro Blazer, BH ("Büstenhalter" = bra) and "Becher"= beaker. Don't get them mixed up!

What's on/off the needles?
  • Ms. B:
    • Montego Bay Scarf (FO)
    • Started another Montego Bay Scarf
    • Vista Mare aka Billy Reid Socks (she's going to submit the pattern to Knitty!)
    • Secret Project (technically FO)
(We started digressing again and talked about the merits of knitting Montego Bay Scarf with MariSilk, e.g. from Sheepaints or Das Schneeschaf...and Ms. B is still dealing yarns to Cashyie and to me.)
  • Cashyie:
    • Montego Bay Scarf using "South Tyrolean Mankitten in Lederhosen", see picture above (FO)
    • Started another Montego Bay Scarf (Seriously! We're Montego Bay Scarf mad!)
    • Frogged some of the Periodic Table swatches
(Another digression: Taking your shoes off to show off your hand-knit socks in bars)

We then discuss about needle sizes in Germany...they don't do half-sizes after 6 mm....We keep going back to the our craze about Montego Bay Scarf...so I decided to cast on for mine! (It's been cast on and I've knit quite a bit already. I decided to call it the "Monte Carlo Scarf").

German Terms with Elemm (don't get these two terms mixed up!):
  • Schwul = gay, homosexual
  • Schwül = muggy, sticky weather
Ms. B got me around to talk a bit of Thai on the Podcast...so now you should be able to say: "New wood doesn't burn", and "Who sells the chicken egg?" *LOL* We also get around to talking Italian, courtesy of Cashyie...and you should be able to say:
  • Ciao
  • Buon Giorno
  • Ho bisogno di molti soldi
Life in Germany with Ms. B, who finds out that she can exercise while knitting! But that's not what she wants to talk about this time. Bills here are done directly with the bank. Payments are done either with cash or through Überweisung, a bank transfer. And watch out how you sign up for those credit cards! The process of going through those German bureaucracies.

Cashyie watched German TV....and I revealed to her and Ms. B that some talk shows and courtroom shows don't use the real people, but they hire actors, especially the courtroom shows due to the privacy protection. I don't know what happens then, but Cashyie starts talking about going to Speed Dating and I'll probably be going with her.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Munich is supposed to be the longest running one...and apparently, they also sell packaged props to throw and the show is supposedly "tame". *LOL* Or we can go see the show in Paris and join up with Katia & Kylie Mac.

Getting back to Life in Germany, Ms. B talks about the fact that the utility costs here are included in the rent (warm or cold rent. Warm is included, cold is excluded). But some places do it differently. And you'll have to pay surplus at the end of the year if you used too much, or you get money back if you use less than you've paid. Of course, Ms. B ends up having to pay more since her place is kept at tropical temperature during the winter.

You swipe your card and your fingerprints get scanned to go and rent out a DVD at the machine. They also charge by the hour you rent the DVD for.

And then we talk about Pfand, or the deposit on cans and bottles. Turned out that our first show guest from last episode, Christine, carried that empty can of Coke from Ms. B around with her through Germany, because Ms. B told her not to throw it away, since it costs EUR 0.25! There aren't many canned beers around anymore...if any at all.

We also have a new segment, where we pick on the Non-Knitters. Our new show guest, Ms. B's Rock Star Husband!!! We will be looking for new participants to pick on in the future....so watch out, all ye non-knitters out there!

At some point during the quiz, we got around to brainstorming about writing a Whodunnit about Ravelry....we also reached the consent that the Wollmeise is THE German Indie-Dyer. And Lily Chin has the same birthday as me!!!!

How much should you ask for a hand-knit item? Since I've been commissioned with two pairs of socks, I'm at a lost about what price I should ask for. I need to earn some money, but I don't want to sound too steep by asking for too much. How much do you think a hand-knit item should cost? Leave a comment or write us an email at:

KnittersUncensored (at) gmail (dot) com

or discuss about it on our Uncensored Knitters Ravelry Group! (In some broken weak moment, Cashyie and Ms. B thought they could take advantage over my stash and buy off my beloved yarns....no way! I'm a yarn hoarder.)

Announcements:
  • Benediktbeuern Textile Market (22nd-23rd September 2007): Biggest textile market in Germany. Meet the Wollmeise in person! Fondle her gorgeous yarns before making the purchase. There will be a sock-workshop with Yarnissima, the designer of Digitessa! The Knitters Uncensored Team will be there and we all will be having a PJ-Knit-Party! All places are filled already and we will start organising the details soon. So, watch out for an email in the coming week! The list of participants are:
  • Secrets of Chrysopolis, another mystery KAL (in German)!
  • Ms. B's Taste of Germany: The first round will be "Blue". There will be 10 places to grab (okay, 9, since Cashyie is ready to pounce on one set). This will be on the first-come-first-serve basis, so keep a look out on Ms. B's Blog for announcement...and I guess it's also going to be announced here, too. Here's the rough content of the package:
    • Fingering-weight yarn (100% superwash merino) from Wollmeise
    • MariSilk (light fingering) or fingering-weight yarn by Sheepaints (MariSilk or fingering-weight depending on the series)
    • MariSilk (light fingering) or fingering-weight yarn by Das Schneeschaf (MariSilk or fingering-weight depending on the series)
    • Merino-Silk-Ramie mix fingering-weight yarn by Drachenwolle
    • Fingering-weight yarn (100% superwash merino) by Handgefaerbt.com

Episode #05: To Dye For, Dahling (Show Notes)

I'm sorry that this episode came out late. That's why it's extra long...and we have our first show guest!! Due to the release of a certain book, I had to cancel the recording that was scheduled for last week to this week. We then digressed about talk shows and reined back to talking about the book...including the competition on Adam Knits! (already over) So, you know what book we are talking about, right? ;-) (And on my own personal side note: I so want to have THIS!) I ranted on about spoilers on the internet...and Ms. B ranted about people sneezing on her in the cinema.

Talking about cinema...we might go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show here in Munich....at least we talked about it. And I plugged the Katia & KylieMac Podcast yet again.

I also started to talk about Damknit Podcast. She's doing this survey and so you should go and DO IT! And then I did some shameless self-advertising about the interview in gave (in German) to Brigitte.de and Sueddeutsche Zeitung Jetzt...and we discussed whether knitting is only for grandmas?

Germans have to learn to knit/crochet in school (don't know whether they're still doing it now) and Ms. B got really excited because this means her boys will have to learn to knit. It's important, isn't it?! Cashyie talked about ballroom dancing at her work place and I want to learn!!!!

We digressed a bit into talking about Brooklyn Tweed's Noro Scarf.

What's on or off the needles?
  • Ms. B still pretty much has the same stuff on the needles:
  • I, Elemm also still has pretty much the same projects:
  • Cashyie:
    • Cast on for a new scarf
    • Periodic Table Knit (too good for Mankittens)
Life in Germany with Ms. B is going great. This time she talks about "living" in Germany....about how I went to the Kocherlball, whilst Cashyie didn't make it because she was under the influence....she made up for it though with chocolate. We talk about the living situation in Germany, owning vs. renting a place and the price of it all; how all rooms are separated and have doors on them. Finding a place to live in Munich and paying a fee for finding agency. (Cashyie chimes in with the description of her dodgey apartment.) Having your name on the doorbell; laundry in Germany....and "platform toilets"! (You know us, we can't steer away from toilets!)

German terms with Elemm:
  • Zephyr Jaegerspun
  • der Pullover / der Pulli = Sweater, Pullover
  • die Veste = vest
  • die Strickjacke = cardigan
  • die Jacke = jacket
  • der Pullunder = slipover
  • die Socke(n) = sock(s)
  • Highlight -->*Scheiße = shit*
  • Highlight -->*Arschloch = asshole*
Cashyie got a marriage proposal from a listener! Now she's going to do a yarn swap with him!

Ms. B and Elemm had their first dyeing experiences!! Ms. B tried it before I did. Cashyie recognises the competitive streak between me and Ms. B. And for your information, I used more or less this Kettle Dye Tutorial, you can read about it HERE.

Ms. B starts dealing yarns and other goodies. She also received this HUMONGOUS package from Cauchy09. Apart from that, Ms. B also re-started sewing again. She made these extremely cute project bags!

Announcements:

Go visit her photography website: FreshPhotography and her other site! She's trying to start a sock for her trip (which she actually started later after the recording - and she's knitting with Opal).

Music for this week:

"Places People Hide Their Money" by Ridel High (lead singer is Kevin Ridel, who was in a band with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and Ms. B's Rock Star Husband back in their hey-days, and is now in the band AMRadio)...and remember to substitute the word "money" with "yarn" ;-)

Hope you enjoyed this extra long episode! Until the next episode....Keep knitting!

Yours,
Elemm

Episode #03: The One Which Must Not Be Named (Show Notes)

We're back with the third episode! I need to warn you though, there's hardly any knitting-related content in this episode at all. But we had fun nevertheless! (What's with me getting progressively drunk while recording...plus, I pushed the wrong button once and deleted a whole section! *oops*)

We had loads of great fun. I just can't believe some of the things I said on and off mic...I ended up physically rolling off the floor laughing!

So, let's get on with the show!

Thank you for mentioning us!
We digressed immensely here and started talking about toilet drops *LOL*

We also would like to thank you for all the comments, emails and iTunes reviews!!!

....and don't forget to answer my Quiz! ;-)

One weird fact:
  • Cashyie went on a date...to a Strip-Club! (And ran in to a *famous* scientist)
  • Ms. B has uneven legs!
  • Elemm's hooked on re-hanking yarns and taking photos of them
What's on our needles?
Life in Germany with Ms. B: Television in Germany....mostly in German. So she escapes with Internet Television. Shady programmes after midnight, paid by your Television Fees! Going to the movies thinking it was in English....*wrong* (they wouldn't let me join in the discussion about popcorns!). Tobacco commercials in the movies.
  • OV: Originalversion = Originial Version
  • OoU: Original ohne Untertitel = Original without subtitle
  • OmU: Original mit Untertitel = Original with subtitle
Cashyie goes shopping! This time, she went and got herself a Dirndl, so she can get South Tyrolians! :-p If you have South Tyrolians to spare, please write to

KnittersUncensored (AT) gmail (DOT) com

I (Elemm) was going to talk about photography tips this time but we talked so much already that it would've been too much (plus, I was too drunk to string together something comprehensible....so, no chance of doing a segment without slurring badly *LOL*)

Announcements:

This is an open invitation to all the listeners, as well as to all podcasters out there! It's on during Oktoberfest, what better excuse to combine yarn with beer?!
  • Join our Hank Wankers Group! Wind all your yarns into beautiful hanks!!!! Just 'wank your hanks!' *LOL*
Music:
  • Knitters Uncensored Theme Song by Ms. B and her DH!
  • Closing Song: "One more year at Hogwarts" by Billy Reid (I and Ms. B will be knitting him each a pair of socks! If you feel like joining us in this then send us an email!)

Yours (totally sobered and without a hangover),
Elemm

Ps. We talked a bit about Ravelry, if you're not a beta tester yet then go and put your name down. If you've put your name down but haven't received an invitation yet, then go check your junkmail....if it's not there, then just be patient! You will get in soon!! In the mean time, just go take pretty photos of your stash and your projects! ;-)
